Early Morning Bornholm Harbor, Oland Island
After a leisurely breakfast, . . .
we rolled out of Bornholm about 9:30 am, returning to the ferry port via the east shore road. We enjoyed perfect weather, blue skies, and our first headwind of about 8 mph. Of course we managed to find a few gravel roads and one dirt path, but they were all designated as a bike route.
The theme of the day would be windmills, sometimes single, sometimes in rows, mostly old and some modern. The information is often in Swedish, but here are two English explanations, followed by multiple windmill photos. They all have a central shaft. The entire mill is rotated into the wind, using the extended tree-lever and perhaps a horse on the end for power.
One mill was open, showing . . .
. . . central shaft and pinion gear . . .
. . . and mill stone.
Lots of rune stones were about, some old and perhaps some not so old.
Farm Shop/Store
Runestone and skulls in a small museum.
Carved Viking long ship mast head in the same museum.
John checking out the more current museum dining display. John asked for a dance; she ignored him.
Borg translates as stronghold. So, Rosenborg is the stronghold of the Rosen clan, and I thought the Rosens were Jewish.
Stone, cold storage hut.
Poppies with a view east to the sea.
Farm Stand. Delicious local strawberries are in season, 30 SK per pint box. Beautiful produce.
Oland Wheat Field
I have no ear for languages. Perhaps our favorite phras is Hey hey, meaning Hi or Hello. And we learn from signs:
Entrance
Exit
Moose Warning
Old Saddles
Old Monark bike, with leather-wrapped tubes.
Lunch. Two original Budweiser's (Budvar), the original source, and two APAs (American Pale Ales), made in Sweden, while we wait for our pizza and the ferry back to Kalmar. Life is good.
John improves the presentation.
Gnome of the Day
Dogs of the Day, ignoring the Cat of the Day.
Dog of the Day #2. Cold blooded watch dog.
